UTSUGI KONTAI / IGAKU KEIGO

To use a historical text is to be accountable to its author.

A research visit made before the present reconstruction of MLMN and its study of Japanese Kampo reasoning.

Igaku Keigo, the first six volumes of Utsugi Kontai's four-work, twenty-five-volume Kokun Iden, is one of the central Japanese sources examined by Wisdom Terra. It does not merely preserve treatments. It asks how names, signs, disease processes and therapeutic judgment should be organised into a coherent medical account.

Why Kontai matters to this project

Kontai worked within Japanese medicine while re-examining the conceptual architecture of the classics. His discussions of the Six Conformations, Sanjiao (the Triple Burner), ministerial fire, channels and abdominal findings offer an unusually ambitious attempt to connect close observation with a larger explanatory structure.

Those questions overlap with the problem that led to MLMN: how can information from the body, classical categories, temporal change and clinical decisions be related without flattening them into a single diagnosis? Any relationship proposed here remains a research hypothesis. Kontai's text, later interpretations and Wisdom Terra's reconstruction are kept distinct.

A Research Visit

Before writing, I went to pay my respects.

Before writing the paper and developing MLMN, I visited Utsugi Kontai's grave. I intended to cite and examine his writings while connecting his questions to a modern framework for clinical reasoning, and I wanted to acknowledge that responsibility before beginning the work in earnest.

These photographs are not presented as historical evidence about Kontai's life or ideas. They record a researcher's responsibility to the author behind the source: to state what the text says, what later readers added, and where a modern reconstruction begins.

Source-critical status

The six volumes of Igaku Keigo are being reviewed against source images, OCR, edited transcription and translation drafts. Completion of a digital record does not by itself mean that every character or interpretation has been verified. Wisdom Terra therefore labels provisional text and research inference separately.
