SOURCE-CRITICAL WORK

Classical sources should be inspectable, not ornamental.

Image review, OCR, transcription, translation and interpretation must remain distinguishable.

Wisdom Terra studies how classical medical claims are transformed as they move from an historical page into modern clinical language. A polished translation is not enough if readers cannot see what was read, corrected or inferred.

Six layers of a responsible digital edition

1. Source image

The page, edition and image provider form the evidential starting point.

2. Raw OCR

Machine output is preserved as provisional and may contain clinically important errors.

3. Edited text

Character corrections and segmentation decisions are documented rather than hidden.

4. Reading

Punctuation and syntactic interpretation are made explicit.

5. Translation

A modern rendering is presented as an interpretation, not the original itself.

6. Research inference

Historical commentary, cross-text comparison and MLMN hypotheses receive separate labels.

How classical evidence enters MLMN

A classical statement is not inserted into the framework as timeless fact. The record should identify the text, edition, passage, editorial uncertainty, historical context and the specific inference being proposed. Independent passages that disagree are preserved as competing evidence.

Returning to the source does not make the source infallible. It makes our route of interpretation open to correction.
